ABOUT THIS ARANGETRAM!
The most commonly heard term in the world of Bharatanatyam is “Arangetram,” which refers to the debut performance marking the transition from student to professional dancer. It serves as a significant milestone that requires dedication, hard work, and physical stamina.
Bharatanatyam encompasses various styles known as “Bani”. My mentor specializes in the “Vazhuvoor Bani”, known for its innovative thinking and strong expression (Abhinaya). These qualities are deeply instilled in Dr. Narayanan’s approach.
A traditional Bharatanatyam Arangetram performance follows a structured order called “Margam”, consisting of seven to eight parts. This Margam holds numerous layers of artistic expression.
In this particular Arangetram, Dr. Subashree Narayanan incorporated some unique elements while preserving the essence of a typical Margam. As a result, we refer to it as “Natya Nivedana,” a Dance recital. We draw parallels between the traditional Margam and this innovative “Natya Nivedana” presentation.
Typical Margam | Natya Nivedana Margam | |
---|---|---|
1 | Allarippu & Jathiswaram | Thodayamangalam |
2 | Shabdham | Padam |
3 | Pada Varnam | Varnam equivalent |
4 | Padam | Padam |

7 | Mangalam or Shloka | Mangalam (a message-oriented piece) |
